Ranking the Best UAAP Season 82 Basketball Players Part 3: Value Point System

This series will use different advanced basketball stats and metrics to rank the best UAAP Season 82 Basketball Players.

As defined by Dan Hoppen from the Hudl Tips, value point system pro­vides an all-encom­pass­ing look at how play­ers and teams per­form by weigh­ing their pos­i­tive con­tri­bu­tions against their neg­a­tive ones. The result­ing num­ber shows how effec­tive the play­er is.

The formula though looks very simple in contrast to the other metrics used in this series. I personally do not like this metric but it is interesting in a sense that the metric is very different from the other metrics so this gives a new perspective.

Value Point System Formula

One look at the formula, you’ll see how assists, steals and blocks are value highly as they are multiplied by 2. Field goal misses, fouls and turnovers meanwhile punishes a player in this metric.

Here are the top 10 players based on the metric value point system:

*Note that for Parts 3 to 5, players who are eligible in the rankings must have a usage rate that is above league average because the three metrics focus on efficiency rather than accumulated stats. We will also be starting to show the true shooting percentage. True shooting percentages that are not ranked did not meet the requirements (free throw attempts, 2 point attempts and 3 point attempts must be above league average).
